So all you have to worry about is enjoying your sofa.
And which size, which design, which model and which colour should you choose? It isn’t always straightforward, so we’ve created a sofa guide that’ll help you tailor-make your perfect sofa.
We’ll guide you through the many options and decisions in 7 steps, which will help inform you about which sofa to buy. Each step covers the most common questions and considerations, from size and design to color and upholstery fabric.
Step 1: How big should your sofa be?
The size is the first thing to consider – how many seats and how much space do you need? Also, think about how many people will usually be sitting together and whether you mostly sit or lie down on the sofa. If you have a lot of space, it’s good if the sofa only takes up a small part of the room, so a corner or modular sofa will often be best. In a smaller living room, a classic 2- or 3-seater sofa will typically be more suitable. If you live in compact space, a sofa bed can free up some room.
2-seater Sofa
A 2-seater sofa is a classic and stylish choice that doesn’t require much space. A 2-seater sofa can work alone or as part of a furniture set-up where there needs to be enough space for both armchairs and a sofa.
3-seater Sofa
A 3-seater sofa takes up slightly more room, but on the other hand creates much more space for guests and evenings with the family. A 3-seater sofa is ideal for a home where the sofa shouldn’t take up too much space visually, but should still provide ample seating space. It can also be combined with an armchair or a 2-seater sofa.
Modular sofa
The most important feature of a modular sofa is its flexibility, as it can be assembled exactly as you like. You can remove or add more modules any time if your needs change. A modular sofa is the perfect choice if you have plenty of space and dream of the ultimate lounge-style sofa.
Corner sofa
If you’ve got enough floor space and want a large sofa with room for the whole family, a corner sofa is the ideal choice for you. The corner sofa is good for rooms where many people gather, creating a beautiful setting for conversation and cosy times
Step 2: Which design should you choose?
Once you’ve chosen the size of your sofa and which model is best suited to your needs, you’ll need to consider the design of your sofa. Are you into inviting shapes with generously proportioned surfaces, or do you prefer simple sofas with timeless qualities in a clean and stylish design?

Step 3: Fabric, colour and material?
Curated in beautiful textures and tones, our collection of upholstery fabrics and leathers is specially selected to create calm and cohesive spaces in timeless colours – whether you’re looking for bouclé, linen, velvet, recycled textiles, wool or leather. Like our sofas, the Classic sofa cushions can be ordered in all upholstery fabrics, just as all upholstery fabrics are also available by the metre – so you can complete your interior design with custom-made curtains, bedspreads, cushions and much more.
Step 4: Martindale, pilling and light fastness?
Martindale, pilling and light fastness inform you about a fabric’s durability and abrasion resistance. We use them to make it easy for you to see which is the best kind of furniture fabric for you and your needs.
Step 5: Foam or down filling?
When you design your new sofa at Bolia.com, you can choose between firm or soft seating. The firm seating with cold foam gives a tighter appearance to your sofa, and the soft down filling is more pliable and needs to be beaten a little more into place. We only use foam of the highest quality and, as a starting point, all sofas are filled with cold foam. We use down filling to create extra softness and comfort, and our modular sofa, Cosima, is almost exclusively filled with down to create its soft and inviting form.
Step 6: Maintenance
Your sofa will change its shape and appearance over time, and that’s why it needs love and care. We’ve put together our best tips on how to extend the life of your sofa.
